The start of November has been a great one for RCSE.  On Saturday, November 6th, members braved the rain and cold in order to come together for the November Service Project at America's Second Harvest.  In just two short hours, members were able to assemble 447 boxes of food! That equates to 8.94 pallets.  Each box feeds a family of four for 3 days.  That's quite an impact RCSE has made for our community.  It's opportunities like this that demonstrate the power that each of us can make.  It's 'Service Above Self' come to life!

And then on Tuesday, November 9th, there was a gathering at Tubby's Tank House in Thunderbolt for an evening of fun!  It was great to see so many members, spouses, & friends... but best of all, we got to celebrate our friend Gordon with a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday!! Thank you to everyone who has been able to participate in RCSE events over the past week.

Also, don't forget about our ongoing Service Project with Senior Citizens, Inc.  The Service Project committee purchased several hundred Thanksgiving cards and we'll be partnering with the Meals on Wheels program of Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI) to distribute the cards to homebound and isolated seniors the week of Thanksgiving.  If you have completed your cards, please bring them to the meeting on Friday, November 12th or Friday, November 19th.

A Message from Paul Goodnow

Dear Rotarians

We have received numerous requests from Clubs and Rotarians in our District who want to help in their communities during this virus crisis time.  To help answer these requests District 6920 is partnering with IVolunteer International and Shopping Angles to help meet the needs of shut-in senior citizens during the Corona Virus/COVID 19 crisis.   This is an opportunity for Rotary Clubs and individual Rotarians to have a positive, meaningful impact on the lives of the home-bound seniors.

IVolunteer International is a 501(c)(3) organization started by former GRSP Student Nipuna Ambanpola to use technology and help charities who need volunteers who want to donate their time and talents.

Shopping Angels was recently started by a group of college students in Nevada to help home-bound senior citizens connect with volunteers who will deliver groceries to them. Their movement has been featured on CNN, FoxNews, Insider, Today, and two weeks ago, got a “thank-you” from POTUS on live television. But their method of “matching” was done manually, so they were struggling to handle the traffic and increased need.  IVolunteer has partnered with Shopping Angels to bring this opportunity to Georgia and is using the IVolunteer technology to match seniors to volunteers in their communities.

This is a great opportunity for Clubs and Rotarians to volunteer and to support the Shopping Angels work.  It is also a great opportunity to let our communities know what Rotarians are doing during this crisis (as Marjorie says “It is a press release!”)

October 4, 2019 - Sheriff's Complex Field Trip

story thumbnail
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Complex is largest jail in Georgia outside of Atlanta and is the third oldest Sheriff’s department in the United States, having been founded in 1732.  Sheriff Wilcher is the 63rd Sheriff to serve Chatham County.  600 employees operate the 75,000 square foot facility, which sees about 18,000 people held in a year and has approximately 1,800 people housed at any one time.  There are 9 housing units in total and 4 pods within a unit; there are 70 people in a pod. They serve 6,000 meals per day, which feeds all inmates and staff.  The cost per inmate is $70 per day.

The tour for RCSE members was led by Lieutenant Hall, Commander Todd Freesman (Rotary West member), and Major Boyles; we started in the Intake Area before they showed us one of the GED classrooms. We learned about several training programs, including a SERV Safe, the Chaplin’s program, and the Operation New Hope canine training program, all of which are designed to give inmates skills that will assist them when the re-enter society.  We had a chance to visit the Operation New Hope canine training program in one of the women’s housing pods, Unit 4, where we saw female inmates working with their dogs, all of whom are shelter dogs who would’ve otherwise been euthanized.  The intensive training program not only provides inmate handlers with job and life skills, but provides socialization and basic obedience training to the dogs to make them more suitable for adoption.  It started in 2011 and is the most successful program currently operating at the complex.

September 27, 2019 - Service Project

story thumbnail
This past Friday, members of RCSE met at America's Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia for lunch and to help pack food for people in need.  America's Second Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia serves 21 counties and is on track to supply 19 million pounds of food this year.  The food helps over 160,000 people from children to senior citizens.  Kids Café was started at Coastal Georgia in the 1980's and is the 3rd largest childhood hunger initiative in the nation.  In true RCSE fashion, the members who attended exceeded the goal that was set for the day by packing 3 pallets instead of 2!  The three pallets equated to 189 boxes, 3780 pounds of food, and 3150 meals served.  RCSE lived out the Rotary motto of Service Above Self.  Way to go Savannah East!

Raise awareness of foster care in Georgia, 2. Engage business owners to help with the cause by volunteering their services to help, and 3.  Find mentors for those in the foster care system.  Even though her talk was not coordinated with the speaker, it was the perfect introduction to Yvonne Pryor who talked to the club about Inner City Night Shelter.

Judy Blackston and Rich Schwartz of New York Life Savannah will talk to the club about their inaugural A Walk to Remember fundraising event in order to raise funds to provide scholarships to area high school students who have suffered the tragic loss of a parent or guardian.  A Walk to Remember is derived from the nationwide effort, the Coalition to Support Grieving Students,  convened in 2013 by the New York Life Foundation. This Coalition is a unique collaboration of the leading professional organizations representing classroom educators and school professionals who have come together with a common conviction: grieving students need the support and care of the school community. The purpose is to create and share a set of industry-endorsed resources that will empower school communities across America in the ongoing support of their grieving students.

This past Sunday, President Ben Brewer went to a meet and greet for the 3 GRSP students being sponsored by area Rotary clubs.  Ben had the opportunity to visit with Brendan Mungwena who is the student Savannah East is sponsoring in conjunction with Savannah South and Savannah West.  Ben reported that Brendan is very excited to be here and seems to be integrating well.

Savannah South and West each have a host family for Brendan and we are looking for someone to fulfill this role for Savannah East.  Since Brendan lives at Armstrong, the host family serves more as a contact for questions or any help Brendan might need.  The host family may also be called upon during the December holiday.  If you are interested in being Brendan's host family, please contact Ben Brewer.

Back to School Breakfast - Haven Elementary

story thumbnail
Thank you to all the members of Savannah East who donated money and helped served breakfast on July 28 to the Faculty and Staff at Haven Elementary in their beautiful new school!  What a great crowd of volunteers to welcome the teachers and staff and to be there to donate books in Claude Wilson's memory.  Superintendent Levett has announced a new initiative to support the new literacy program of ONE MILLION BOOKS to be added to area schoolrooms. Gently used and new books are needed to meet this challenge.  Savannah East will be donating a book in honor of each speaker who presents at the club this year.  Also, stay tuned for information about a book drive for Haven.  RCSE is looking forward to helping with the 1,000,000 book challenge!

Members on the Move - Jason Jones

story thumbnail
Jason was originally a member of Savannah Rotary East in the early 2000’s when he was a Commercial Lender/AVP with The Coastal Bank.  He was brought into the club by Jean Iaderosa.  He spent several years with the club including Sergeant at Arms under Tony O’Reilly.  In 2008 he grew a beard and opened a bar in God’s Country, otherwise known as Athens, Georgia.  Upon his return to Savannah, Jason rejoined the club on October 17, 2014 sponsored by Dr. Stanley Lester.  At this time, Jason was a carefree bachelor with nothing but free time on his hands and employed at TMX Finance.  Since then, he got married on May 2nd, 2015 to the former Lindsay Timmons of Thomasville, Ga. and on September 21st, 2016, Jason and Lindsay welcomed their first child with the birth of their son, Bridger Cannon Jones.  After much pleading, bribing, and cajoling from Jeff Heeder, Jason started his career at Merrill Lynch as a Financial Advisor on March 24th, 2017.  He can be reached at 912-351-2348 or jones.j@ml.com.  For those with money to invest, he can also be reached via beeper, Morse Code, or smoke signal.  Jason enjoys spending time with his family, and reminiscing about when he had time to enjoy boating, golf, rugby, tennis, Gridiron, Debtor’s Society, and college football.

Harold Tessendorf, with Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity, spoke to RCSE.  Coastal Empire Habitat for Humanity promotes strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter.  Affordable housing is an important component when trying to reduce poverty but is one that is often times overlooked.  A statistic from February 2017 showed the average monthly rent for a 2- bedroom living space in Savannah was $900 and wages have not been able to keep up with the increase cost of housing.

December 2 - Meeting Recap

story thumbnail
The Rotary Club of Savannah East welcomed a talk on one of Savannah famous landmarks, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Lafayette Square. Club member, Peter Palucci volunteers his time giving tours of the fascinating Cathedral, and he is clearly passionate about the Cathedral. He revealed the Cathedral’s history dated back to the when the French Catholic émigrés established Savannah’s first parish, called the Congrégation de Saint Jean-Baptiste in the late 1700’s. Over the centuries there were building moves and a fire which almost destroyed the Cathedral. Eventually the magnificent structure that adorns Savannah today reigned triumphant.

It would be great if Savannah East could sponsor a team or two (4 players @ $125 each) and/or hole sponsors ($100 each). What a great way to support the club's dedication to education.
