In lieu of having a speaker, President Beth Hancock held a Club Assembly to discuss a few items that had been voiced during the most recent Board Meeting. The first order of business was GRSP (Georgia Rotary Student Program). GRSP is a unique program which was founded in 1946. Every year, around 60+ students ranging in age from 18-25 years old come to study at a university in Georgia. The students are recommended from local Rotary clubs in their country. Currently, Savannah South and Savannah West Rotary Clubs share the responsibility of hosting a student each year. They have approached RCSE to ascertain if our club would be interested in joining in a sponsorship. The approximate cost for RCSE to co-sponsor a student would be around $4,000 each year. The consensus among the members present was that they would like to join South and West in participating in the GRSP program. Some members voiced concerns over being able to financially afford participating each year. Beth is going to further investigate the cost to ensure RCSE could support such a program for years to come. A decision will be made by end of 2016 since the selection process starts in January 2017.
Another item that was discussed was how to use money that is raised from Raffle, Fines and Happy dollars. This money will either be put towards Haven Elementary School, Club Projects or GRSP if the club decides to participate.
Since membership isn't as high as it used to be, a member suggested looking into the possibility of merging with another club in town. Another member suggested starting an incentive program for those who sponsor a new member. Beth is going to bring all suggestions to the next Board Meeting which is scheduled for Friday, September 16.
A message from Ginger Duncan, RCSE's liaison to the Savannah Early Childhood Foundation:
The Foundation will be holding its first annual golf fundraiser, sponsored by Rotary Club South, on October 26, 2017 at Southbridge Golf Club.
Rotary South has agreed to apply 100% of the net proceeds contributed by Rotary directly to SECF.
It would be great if Savannah East could sponsor a team or two (4 players @ $125 each) and/or hole sponsors ($100 each). What a great way to support the club's dedication to education.
