Please note that this week’s meeting will be held off-site at Gray’s Reef Ocean Discovery Center, 340 Martin Luther King Blvd. A picnic lunch will be provided from 11:45am - 12:25pm before we walk over to the center for a private tour from 12:30pm - 1:00pm. Information about picnic location and parking will be sent prior to Friday. During the tour, we will see new exhibits and learn more detailed information about the sanctuary and the marine life that inhabits the reef. In order to have a lunch for all in attendance, you must RSVP to this meeting!
On Saturday, April 18, we will be tackling a couple of simple projects at Savannah Botanical Gardens including planting shrubs and flowers, spreading mulch, and painting the railings of the wooden bridges to the Camellia Garden. The Gardens team will have everything prepped for us, and tools and supplies will be provided, so just bring your favorite work gloves and a willingness to jump in! Family and friends are welcome but please note that volunteers should be comfortable kneeling, bending, and lifting up to approximately 20 pounds. Another wonderful Rotary meeting this past Friday! We had the privilege of hearing from Peyton who will be studying in South Korea next year through the Rotary Youth Exchange. As part of the exchange, a student from abroad will be studying here in Savannah at an area high school and host families are needed to house the student for 90-100 days. If you are interested in being a host family, please let Kerri know. Once all Rotary business items were discussed and Happy dollars collected, Cheri Dean introduced our speaker for the, Mark Lindsay, who is the CEO of the Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club.
The Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club was established in Savannah in 1917. They are opened from 3pm-9pm and have a total of 2000 members. Currently, 500 kids are served daily throughout three high schools and two middle schools. The club is there for youth development, not childcare, as their goal is to create good citizens. 98% of teens who come through the program graduate from high school and 90% continue with their education. The club is partnering with area nonprofits in order to engage teen membership. In addition to offering sports, they provide STEM education, mental health support, and homework help. If you would like to take a tour of the facility, they are given every Tuesday at 4:30pm.
