Details for the June 12th Meeting

We will be meeting at The Pirates House this Friday in our normal meeting room - Captain Flints Hall.

Our speaker this week is Maggie Lee who is a freelance data reporter.  Maggie will present on which entities pay and don't pay Chatham County Property Taxes.  Across the country, colleges, even private ones, are by-and-large exempt from property taxes. Georgia and SCAD are no exception. The idea is that education is a public good so it's worth giving those places police, fire, water and other public services for cheap or free. But some cities are starting to reconsider the bargain when they look at private schools with large endowments, unaffordable tuition and property portfolios in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

RCSE looks forward to seeing all members and guests on Friday!
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
June Service Project - Pet Food Drive
As part of our upcoming pet food drive, we’ll be collecting dog and cat food to support seniors served through SCI. Many seniors who receive pet food assistance have difficulty managing large bags, so we’ll also be turning this into a brief hands-on service project during our June 29 meeting.

We are asking members to purchase specific dog and cat foods and bring them to the June 29 meeting. During the meeting, we’ll spend about 20 minutes working together assembly-line style to divide the larger bags of food into gallon-size bags that are easier for seniors to handle.  Please click on the link below for a photo of the requested food items.

June 5, 2026 - Meeting Recap
This past Friday, RCSE had Michael Bell, Executive Director of Savannah Pride Center, and Jessica Saunders, Program Director for Savannah Pride Center, present to our club.  Before Michael began his presentation, President Kim Campbell reminded all those in attendance about the June Social and Service Project.

Michael stated that the LGBTQ population is increasing in our area and that the Savannah Pride Center is here to help provide medical and holistic care to them.  They offer a free clinic four times a month and work with students at Georgia Southern and Mercer Medical School to educate them on the language to use as well as problems facing the LGBTQ population. People come from over +4 hours to use the services that the center provides. They also offer free training for local businesses.  Michael and Jessica talked about the resistance and hurdles they are facing including displacement which is why they have an emergency housing program and help with job placement. Less than 1% of philanthropic giving is donated to LGBTQ causes and they do not receive any federal funding.  The center is only able to operate through corporate giving and community partners.  Michael said the best way we can help is by being an ambassador of the program and cause.  To learn more about the Savannah Pride Center, please visit http://www.savannahpridecenter.org
