Cozy would be one word to describe the setting for RCSE's meeting this past Friday! Even though the meeting was moved to a much smaller room, it was still business as usual. President Karl Bohnstedt reminded members of the Annual Holiday Party on Wednesday, December 18th. The party will begin at The Planters Inn with some appetizers and drinks and will end with a trolley ride around downtown Savannah. This event is free for members and guests are $10. If you would like to attend, please RSVP with Kerri. Once all business items were discussed, Laura Lane McKinnon introduced the speaker - our very own Katie Wohlust who spoke on Root Cause Analysis Investigations.
Katie works for Think Reliability which is a company that helps facilitate root cause analysis investigations. 90% of their business is done online and their job is to ask "why." They ask the "why" questions in order to find the problem, conduct an analysis, and offer solutions. Essentially, Katie collects, organizes and documents. In addition to working on what causes a problem, they also do work on process mapping. When working on what causes a problem, they focus not on an individual person but rather on the actual process and why that failed. Humans will always have error but there are backstops that can be put into place to help minimize human error. Katie has worked on projects for refineries as well as hospitals. Katie loves what she does because she feels she is making a difference and can help people. She concluded by saying zero risk isn't possible but zero incidence can be a possibility.
