Thanks to the Historic Savannah Foundation ladies who gave us an overview of the foundation at the meeting. The mission of the Historic Savannah Foundation is to preserve and protect Savannah's heritage. HSF started in 1955 in response to the proposed demolition of the Isaiah Davenport House to make room for a parking lot. Seven ladies banded together and raised $22,500 to save the house.
HSF is a 501c3 non profit organization that has an operating budget of $1.2 million and employs 10 full time staff. The flagship of HSF mission is preservation initiatives like the Revolving Fund Properties which was established in 1959 and has saved more than 360 buildings. The funds help purchase, rehab and then sell buildings in the historic area. HSF also advocates for and reviews proposals for new construction in downtown Savannah. They also offer educational programs and workshops throughout the year. Another important aspect of HSF is the special events that are planned during a year. The leading fundraiser is the HSF Annual Gala which is hosted in a different downtown location each year. All money for Historic Savannah Foundation is raised through events and donations from individuals as well as corporations. You can get involved with the organization by becoming a member ($50 a year), volunteering at events, participating in educational programs, and attending various events throughout the year.
Please continue to collect Box Tops for Haven Elementary!
As part of our ongoing support of Haven Elementary, we will have a Box Tops collection at every meeting. If you don't have a child or grandchild's school you are currently supporting with your Box Tops, please bring them to our Rotary Club meetings. For every 10 box tops, the school will receive $1 - and those dollars will add up quickly!
Look for the pink collection container at the next meeting!
See the Box Tops website for a list of participating products if you are not familiar with the program. http://www.boxtops4education.com/
