NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
May 19, 2023 - Meeting Recap
On May 19, RCSE met via Zoom in order to hear a presentation on melanoma.  President Jason Jones announced a few Rotary business items and then turned the meeting over to Stephen Fine who is the Founder and President of the Melanoma Education Foundation.

Stephen founded the non profit organization Melanoma Education Foundation in 2000 after the death of his son, Dan, who died when he was only 26 years old due to melanoma.  Melanoma can strike across all ages.  The primary target for the organization is middle school and high school students and teachers.  Stephen talked about the three types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.  There are 189,000 new cases of melanoma each year with 25% of the patients being under the age of 40.  When found at an early stage, melanoma is nearly guaranteed to be curable.  Individuals who have a lot of moles, have experienced a lot of sunburn, or spent a lot of time in a tanning bed are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with melanoma.

Stephen says that thorough self skin checks can help catch melanoma in the early stages.  He encouraged everyone to be their own advocate and said "when in doubt, have it out." He concluded his presentation talking about the importance of sun protection!  Sunscreen for your body, lips and protective clothing while outdoors helps reduce sunburn.  Most users only apply about 25%-30% of the recommended amount of sunscreen to their body.  If you are going to be out in the sun for a full day, then you should go through a 6 ounce bottle of sunscreen.  To learn more about the Melanoma Education Foundation, please visit their website https://www.skincheck.org/
