Details for the November 22 Meeting

We will be meeting at The Pirates House this Friday in our normal meeting room - Captain Flints Hall.  The side door to the room will be unlocked if you would prefer to use that entrance.

Our speaker for the meeting this week is Lizann Roberts with The Coastal Georgia Indicators Coalition.  Lizann will share what Coastal Georgia Indicators Coalition (CGIC) does and how the organization improves the Coastal Georgia community well-being by tracking local data related to health, quality of life, economy, and education.  CGIC, along with partners, is the responsible organization for the development and implementation of Chatham Community Blueprint.

RCSE looks forward to seeing all members and guests on Friday!

NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
RCSE Holiday Party & Toy Drive
The Annual RCSE Holiday Party will be held on Tuesday, December 10th, at the home of Andrew Cosey from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM.  Please join your fellow Rotarians for a night of cheer as we celebrate the holidays!  For every person who attends, we are asking that you bring one unwrapped gift that will be donated to CASA.  Toys are needed for children up to the age of 18.  Savannah Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) mission is to recruit and train volunteers to advocate for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse and neglect. The toys collected will be given to these children.  Please RSVP for this event in order to ensure there is plenty of food and drink for everyone.  Spouses and potential members are welcome to attend!  You may RSVP to Kerri at rotarysavannaheast@gmail.com  If you are unable to attend the holiday party and would still like to donate a gift, we will be collecting them at all December meetings.
Books for Haven Elementary
Once again, Rotary Club of Savannah East is collecting books for Haven Elementary!  The books will be used as Speaker Gifts and will then be donated in honor of the speaker to the Haven Media Center.  The librarian at Haven has put together an Amazon wish list of books.  When you click to purchase a book, please make sure the shipping address is to YOU.  Once you receive the book, you will then bring it to a meeting and give it to Kerri.  Thank you for your support of the Haven Media Center!

November 15, 2024 - Meeting Recap
It was a wonderful day at RCSE on Friday as we were able to sing to Bruce Montgomery in honor of his 85th Birthday!  President Mark Sprosty reminded everyone of the book drive for Haven, the upcoming November social, and the ongoing November service project of holiday cards for senior citizens.  Once all Rotary business items were discussed, Kim Campbell introduced our two speakers - Bri Paxton and Laura Lane McKinnon.

Bri began her presentation with a brief history of housing and zoning.  She said if you own your own property, then you can control your own destiny.  She talked about discrimination in property ownership and gave examples of this during the New Deal and Jim Crow laws.  Savannah needs more affordable housing because the area median income is $56,000 while the area median home price is $324,000.  That is an affordability gap of $140,000 meaning the median family can not afford the median home.

Laura Lane began by explaining Housing Savannah saying they are here to education, advocate and fundraise for housing.  We currently have a 10,000 unit deficit in housing in our market.  Around 73% of that 10,000 needs to be housing for the lower to moderate price range.  Laura Lane believes zoning should be overhauled.  She would like to see zoning revert back to the way it used to be which would allow more quads and duplexes to be built.  A member asked "what can we do to help?"  We can talk to our elected officials about zoning and we have to start thinking about the greater good.  Density does not affect housing values.  The presentation ended by saying if we do not do something to help with the current housing situation, there will be an increase in homelessness.
